Betelgeuse

There are red giants, and there are Red Giants ! Betelgeuse is one of the largest stars in our local part of the galaxy, so much so, despite being 600 light years from Earth, it’s one of the brightest stars, and one of the first stars to have the disk directly imaged.

Due to the massive size, the star can often bulge as it outburst huge amounts of gas into interstellar space. The star is expected to go supernova in the near future, it will take 600 years for us to find out, but when it does, it’s likely to be spectacular, and visible during the day, never mind at night.
