honestly if you’re creating a sci-fi anything and you need alien inspiration just google some fungi or parasitic insects or deep sea anything. 

there may be stranger things in this galaxy than cedar-apple rust, but not MANY stranger things, imo

They’re almost entirely defenseless, so they use slow movement to avoid being detected by predators. If they are threatened, however, they can shoot a sticky slime from glands aside their mouthparts to ward off the offending creature and also ensnare prey.

And they have beaky teeth kinda like an octopus!
